  • Enter Substitute Information in the subject line
  • Include your Name and Phone Number
  • Include the substitute position you are interested in: Teacher (must have Bachelor’s degree), Paraprofessional (requires 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours of college, or pass the Paraprofessional exam), Educational Aide, Bus Driver, Health Service Provider, Secretary, Food Service, Custodian.
  • Include education licenses or permits you currently hold or have held in the past

NOTE: Substitutes wishing to substitute with the Temporary, Non-Bachelor Substitute Teacher license must contact the specific school district they would like to substitute in.

Training and Orientation

Substitute Teacher/Educational Aides/Paraprofessionals


Training and Orientation are mandatory for Substitute Teachers, Educational Aides, and Paraprofessionals.

Minimum requirements for Substitute Teachers – Baccalaureate degree from an accredited higher education institution and current substitute teaching license.

Substitutes for Trade and Career Tech Programs must meet one of the following requirements for substitute licensure (see attached):

  • Bachelor’s degree and current license in the subject area in which they are going to teach, or
  • Documentation of at least 5 years of work experience in the subject area being taught (some formal training in the subject area is preferable)

TCESC maintains a substitute database of licensed teachers; instructional aides, and all support staff areas. Substitute support staff includes: School Health Service Providers, Secretary, Food Service, Custodial/ Maintenance, Bus Driver

Substitute Employment


Items/Documents needed for Substitute Employment in addition to Criminal Background Checks (applicants must come to the Tri-County Office for processing). Notice: BCII/FBI processing could take up to 30-days to process.

Requirements for all Substitutes (Teacher, Educational Aide, Paraprofessional, Bus Driver, Secretary, Food Service, Custodial/Maintenance)

  • Fingerprint verification – NOTICE: BCII/FBI processing could take up to 30-days to process.
  • Applicable contract
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form and present required documents to individual taking your application
  • Copy of driver’s license and social security card

Additional requirements for:

         Substitute Teacher (Baccalaureate degree required)

      • Copy of your current OHIO teaching certificate or current Ohio Substitute Teacher License
      • Attend orientation (see Substitute Training, Orientation and Processing Schedules).

Substitute Educational Aide (High School diploma or equivalent required)

      • Copy of your current Educational Aide permit (with the ESEA endorsement for Paraprofessionals)
      • Attend orientation (see Substitute Orientation)

Substitute School Health Services Provider

      • Proof of Pupil Services License (School Nurse), Pupil Services Registration (Registered Nurse), RN license, LPN license, or STNA certificate

Substitute Bus Driver

      • Copy of your current CDL
      • Current School Bus Driver Certification
